Coaches & Volunteers - Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about joining the bench or helping out this season? Here's everything you need to know about coaching, volunteering, and getting involved with Walden Ringette.

🙋 It’s my first time applying for a volunteer position with WRA. Where do I start?

Start by completing and submitting the Bench Staff Application Form. Applications will be accepted until August 31st.

To be considered, you must submit a valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check (dated within the past 3 years) by the deadline.

After registration closes and the number of teams is confirmed, all applicants will be contacted by email regarding their application status.

📆 What happens after I apply?

After submitting your application and required documents, expect to hear from the Coaching Coordinator shortly after registration closes in early September. Once the number of teams is confirmed and registration numbers are finalized, roles will be assigned and you'll receive onboarding instructions, including next steps for training and certification.

🧩 What if I only want to help sometimes or can’t commit to the whole season?

No problem, we have flexible volunteer options! If you're not ready to commit to a full bench staff role, consider:

  • On-Ice Assistant (especially helpful in FUNdamentals and early development programs)

  • Player Helper

Every bit of help makes a difference, even if it’s just once in a while!

🎓 I was just informed I’ll be on a bench staff this year. What training do I need and how do I register?

First, check out our Bench Staff Requirements by Division. Each role and division has its own set of required certifications.

You’ll also need to:

  • Create or log into an account at TheLocker.coach.ca

  • Look up your NCCP# using your email (especially if you've coached other youth sports)

Some courses will also require registration through Ringette Canada’s Coaching Portal. Once you're registered, you'll be able to access the necessary training modules.

All training requirements must be completed by November 30th.

👩 Do we need a female on the bench?

Yes. Ringette Ontario requires that at least one non-playing female, age 18 or older, be present on the bench and at all team activities for U19 and younger teams.

💰 I just finished my training. Can I get reimbursed?

Yes! WRA will reimburse you for any training or courses that are required for the position you’ve been assigned.

Once you’ve completed all required certifications:

Make sure to send both the confirmation of completion and receipts as soon as possible to avoid delays in reimbursement.

💸 Are there any programs to help with the cost of training?

Yes! Two main programs are available:

  1. NCCP Coach Bursary Program - Covers up to 75% of eligible course registration fees.
Visit the Coaches Association of Ontario to see if you qualify.

  2. Low Income Coach Bursary - Covers up to 100% for those living with low income.

Important: Some eLearning modules through The Locker are not eligible. It is your responsibility to verify your course’s eligibility before applying for a bursary or requesting reimbursement.

If you're applying for a bursary, please notify both the Coaching Coordinator and the Treasurer in advance.

🩹 Where do I send my First Aid certificate or proof of equivalency?

All Trainers must hold a valid Standard First Aid + CPR-C certificate.
Send a copy (or a statement of recognized equivalency) to:

📧 Randee Gauthier - randee.gauthier@greatersudbury.ca

🪖 Do I have to wear a helmet while on the ice?

Yes. Absolutely. No exceptions.
All bench staff and on-ice helpers must wear CSA-approved helmets and skates when participating in any on-ice activity.

🕵 What kind of criminal record check do I need?

If you’re working with players under 18, Ringette Ontario requires a valid Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). This is valid for 3 years and can be completed through Greater Sudbury Police Service’s online portal.

Be sure to allow time for processing — your application can't be approved without it!

📋 I’m coaching for the first time and I’ve never played ringette. What should I plan for practices?

No ringette experience? No problem! There are plenty of resources to help you build great practices:

You’ll find that many of the best coaches started with zero experience and grew alongside their players.

💡 What’s the difference between House League and Regional B/C?

House League teams only play against other teams within the same association and typically don’t travel or attend tournaments.

Regional B/C teams (like those at Walden Ringette) compete against other associations in our region, attend local tournaments, and offer a balance of fun, development, and meaningful competition. This stream is ideal for athletes of all skill levels who want a strong team experience without the commitment of provincial A or AA play.
