FAQs - Coaches/Volunteers

It’s my first time applying for a volunteer position with the WRA. Where do I start?

The first step is to complete and submit the application form linked here. Applications will be accepted until August 31st. It is important that you provide a copy of your most recent police vulnerable sector check (valid for 3 years) before the application deadline in order to be considered. You will be informed of the status of your application by email after registration closes and the number of teams has been determined.

I was just informed that I will be part of the bench staff this year. What training do I need and how do I register?

Start by checking out the requirements checklist for your role. You can access training directly from the checklist. All teams within the WRA are considered Houseleague. Then, login or create an account at TheLocker.Coach.ca. If you’ve been a coach or trainer in the past for any youth sport, you may already have an NCCP#. You can use your email to look up your NCCP number.

Some courses will require you to register with Ringette Canada. Once you are registered, sign in to your profile and you will be able to access courses.

All requirements must be completed for all positions by November 30th.

Do we need a female on the bench?

Yes! At least one member of the bench staff of all U19 or younger teams must be a non-playing female, age eighteen (18) or older and present on the bench and for all team activities.

I just finished all the required courses and/or online training. Will the WRA reimburse me for the costs?

The WRA will reimburse all courses that are required for the volunteer position you have been assigned. It is your responsibility to inform the WRA coaching coordinator (melanie.gardner.hood@gmail.com) when you have met all of the training/certification requirements. If your course qualifies for reimbursement, please send a copy of your receipts to the WRA treasurer (evan_dobbs@hotmail.com) as soon as possible.

What other options are available to help with the costs of training and certification?

The NCCP Coach Bursary Program is available to help cover up to 75% of the costs of eligible course registration* fees. Visit the Coaches Association of Ontario website to see if you qualify. If you will be applying for a bursary, please advise the WRA treasurer and coaching coordinator. The remainder of the course not covered by the bursary will be refunded by the WRA.

If you are a person living with low income, you can apply for the Low Income Coach Bursary that can help to cover up to 100% of course registrations*. Check out the criteria to see if you are eligible.

*Certain eLearning modules purchased through The Locker are not eligible for repayment. It is your responsibility to verify whether your course is eligible for the bursary before applying for reimbursement.

Where do I send a copy of my First Aid certificate or proof of equivalency?

All Trainers must hold a valid First Aid Certificate. A copy of the certificate or a statement (email) that you meet one of the alternatives must be sent to the WRA Coaching Coordinator (melanie.gardner.hood@gmail.com).

Do I have to wear a helmet while on the ice?

Yes. Of course you do.

What kind of criminal record check do I need to volunteer?

If you will be interacting with young athletes under the age of 18 years, Ringette Ontario policy requires the completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check and/or Enhanced Police Record Check, which will be held valid for three (3) years.? This can be done online on the GSPS website.

I’ll be coaching for the first time and I’ve never played ringette. What kinds of drills or games should I plan?

There are a number of great resources to help coaches plan practices. You can reach out to experienced coaches from other teams or get started with Ringette Ontario’s Drill Library. You can also check out these resources:
